The Indian Women’s Association (IWA) is a team of dedicated ladies with a mission to “Lend a Helping Hand”. As a part of our humanitarian and community service we have crossed several goals and pledge to carry on our obligation to society in Kuwait. We have widened our range of community care and embarked upon health awareness campaign under the banner “Reach for Health”. Earlier we had conducted a health awareness seminar for women at the Kuwait Medical Association (KMA) premises during the month of April 2007, where women were educated about breast cancer, birth control, menopause and cosmetic surgery.
To continue this campaign we are conducting another such seminar on women’s health issues for the public again at the Kuwait Medical Association Hall, Jabriya at 5 pm. on 18th of April, 2009.

Spread a Special Smile Awards Ceremony

“The program was initiated in order to provide an enriching and positive experience that helped students explore their feelings, examine their values, discover their own special individuality and promote awareness and understanding of special needs children.”
It was a happy day at the Kuwait Society for the Handicapped (KSH) as the High School students’ summer volunteer program “Spread a Special Smile” organized by the Indian Women’s Association (IWA) drew to a close, with a special felicitation ceremony for the young volunteers of the program.
The program was initiated in order to provide an enriching and positive experience that helped students explore their feelings, examine their values, discover their own special individuality and promote awareness and understanding of special needs children. As the program concluded this week, KSH and IWA wanted to thank the students at a special ceremony at the society, where dignitaries like Sheikha Omniya Al Mubarak Al Sabah,IWA’s Royal Affiliate and the Director and other senior officials of KSH were present along with Dr. Riaz Khan, President of Indian Doctors’ Forum, volunteers of the program, their parents and members of IWA.Specially designed certificates were handed to the volunteers, and the evening ended with a song and music session with Mr. Tony Alphonso on the guitar, which the children love.
Nothing brings more smiles on the faces of the children at the society than a big, richly decorated cake, and the Happy Birthday song for everybody. Cake, music and smiles on every face - a special way to end a program for the special children.
Compassionate Care

“We take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses and volunteers present
on that day.”
Another of IWA’s pet projects, “Compassionate Care” was held at the St.Theresa’s Church, Salmiya where
Doctors, Nurses, Volunteers and of course the IWA Committee was present to provide medical assistance
to those who cannot afford it through the normal channels.
The venue was purposely different this time from the Holy Family Cathedral at Kuwait City, in order to
reach a more diverse section of the population. Sheikha Omniya was the Guest of Honor, and was pleased to
see the volunteer activities on such an organized scale. The doctors present examined
Bridge of Hope

“Bridge of Hope” is IWA’s ambitious project to support the HIV affected children of the Vasco Social Service Centre. The kids total 93 in all, and have either one or both parents who is HIV positive, or lost either parent to AIDS, and a few of them are orphaned as well. IWA’s support to them is three pronged.
• The first phase of help instituted providing the children with basic necessities like raincoats, rain shoes, umbrellas, uniforms and bags. The uniforms were tailored by one of the children’s parents, so the income went back to them as well.
• The second phase is to provide them with school fees for a year, this includes two special needs kids with physical and mental challenges attending special schools.
• Since the children are not from literate backgrounds the third phase constitutes providing them with private tuition fees, to give their academic capabilities a boost, so that they may have a chance to lead normal lives.
We are working closely with the social workers of the centre to extend whatever we
can do for these children, to provide them some glimmer of hope in their otherwise
dark lives.

IWA extends itself to as many women and children in distress. Recently the case of
underprivileged children in Mumbai was referred to us and we decided to support
them. Seen here are the appreciation letter from the school in question, and a picture
of the students we helped.
Farewell to Ambassador Ganapathy
Farewell to Ambassador Ganapathy & Our Patron Mrs. Uma Ganapathy

We can’t thank you both enough, for always being there for us
With forever a kind word, a helping hand, without a fuss
For being there to ably guide, support, hearten and cheer
With you we were forever empowered and had no fear
In lending the helping hand and bringing a smile to the faces
Of those who needed help and of happiness had no traces
Even as the time has so suddenly drawn to say goodbye then
May God keep you in His tender care, so long till we meet again!
